Paying for Therapy:

"Out-of-Network" Insurance Benefits   OR   Self Payment

"Out-of-Network" Insurance Benefits

I'm an "Out-of-Network" Provider for most major insurance companies. Clients using this insurance benefit pay for therapy at sessions, and receive from me regular receipts for services. Depending on your insurance company, I can submit claims for benefits electronically for you, or help you submit the required form to your company for reimbursement.

While "Out-of-Network" doesn't usually require insurance treatment plans, coordination, and case management, it does requires a current mental health disorder diagnosis. I'll discuss this health diagnosis with you before I list it on your detailed receipt.

* Please note: "marriage counseling" is not a covered health diagnosis. Couples expecting to use insurance to help pay for their therapy must be aware that one person of the couple must be diagnosed with a mental health disorder in order for insurance benefits to apply.

While most insurance plans include Out-of-Network mental health benefits, some may not. Please verify your current benefits before planning to use this form of insurance for therapy.

Self Pay

Many of my clients pay for their therapy personally.

Private paying clients choose not to involve insurance companies in their mental health care, period. They consciously choose their therapist, someone they know to be professional, compassionate and effective and who shares their own personal or spiritual values.  Their therapy is not limited by the diagnosis, treatment plan or session limits that health policies dictate.

Additionally, I can assure private pay clients of the highest degree of privacy, flexibility and control of their mental health record allowed by Minnesota state law, since my records are exempt from insurance reporting and random compliance audits.

To help make paying for therapy easier, I offer prepayment cash discounts and see a set percentage of clients who use my Negotiated fee. Many of my clients submit their receipts to their employee annual Health Savings or Flex Savings Account (HSA/FSA), and receive their own pretax money back.

This collaborative and independent financial process allows me the freedom to concentrate on what is essential in therapy: my clients and their families. I don't work for the insurance companies; I work directly with my clients. I trust you will notice the difference.

Hourly rates provide the greatest degree of scheduling and financial flexibility for therapy. Fees are payable at each session by cash, check, or bank debit/credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express.) Additional time in sessions or by phone will incur added charges.

Some clients may prefer to pay ahead or pay less frequently. I offer a substantial discount on 4 or more 50 minute prepaid sessions by cash or personal check.

Fees are payable at the first of the scheduled discounted sessions, and must be used within six months. No refunds will be given for any unused sessions. Examples:
